Borders Veterinary Cardiology provides a specialist cardiology service to zoo animals in conjunction with Zoological Medicine Ltd


Borders Veterinary Cardiology Director Craig Devine BVSc DVC MRCVS, a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Diplomate in Veterinary Cardiology, has experience in zoo and wildlife cardiology, particularly with gorillas and other primates, and seals. Here he is seen performing an echocardiography examination of a gorilla to evaluate if there are signs of myocardial fibrosis, a condition to which gorillas appear particularly prone.


The Zoo animals and wildlife cardiorespiratory service is provided in conjunction with Zoological Medicine Ltd. Romain Pizzi BVSc MSc DZooMed FRES MACVSc(surg) MRCVS, is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons recognised specialist in Zoo & Wildlife Medicine, special lecturer in Zoo & Wildlife Medicine at the University of Nottingham, and veterinary surgeon at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo.

Zoological Medicine Ltd specialises in minimally invasive "Keyhole" surgery of zoo and other animals. Here a thoracoscopic pericardiectomy is being performed - Keyhole surgery of the fibrous membrane surrounding the heart.
